Here’s a fun and easy preschool printable.

The Shape Sort Mat and Cards are not only great for teaching shape recognition, but are also great for shape name and color recognition.

The way we are using them:

One sheet is meant as a mat and the other is meant to be cut apart and placed on top of the corresponding shapes. You can use either sheet to cut or leave together.

Have your child match the shapes by laying them on the mat and say each shape as your child lays them on the mat.

There’s a few ways to do this:

Have your child find their own shapes as you ask “Can you find where that (shape) goes?”

Ask “Can you find (shape)?” and have your child find the shape and lay it on the mat.

You pick a shape and ask your child “Can you find where this (shape) goes?”

You can also try:

“Can you find the (color) (shape)?” Sometimes, if your child knows the color, the color association will aid in being able to sort through the other shapes.

You could also:

  • Cut out both sets of shapes and have your child sort them by shape or color.
  • Print out 2 or 3 of each sheet, cut them, and have your child sort them by color or shape.
